For 70 years, H&R Block has been known as a trusted partner for individuals, families and small businesses navigating the complexities of the U.S. tax system – but our commitment to entrepreneurship extends far beyond tax preparation.

This is reflected in our purpose, embedded in all our work, which is to provide help and inspire confidence in our clients wherever we do business. We are deeply invested in the well-being of all the communities we serve, and we know that access to the right financial tools, resources and expertise is crucial for achieving financial security and small business growth and resilience. Today, Block Advisors and our small business certified tax professionals help more than two million small businesses every year with small business taxes and more.

Since joining H&R Block nearly 15 years ago, I've seen firsthand the impact that financial exploration and strategic planning can have. From tax analysis to multicultural initiatives, operations, marketing and software development, my journey at the company has been fueled by a passion – shared by leadership and colleagues alike – for empowering people, families and small businesses.

Throughout this journey, I’ve witnessed the spirit of entrepreneurism thrive in the Latino community, with more people of Latino heritage launching small and micro-businesses and embracing the gig economy. This was reinforced by our most recent Outlook on American Life Report, which found that Gen Z is leading the charge, with 29% aspiring to work for themselves.

Small business ownership is often a pathway to building generational financial security. Many entrepreneurs dream of leaving their businesses to their children, creating a legacy of entrepreneurship and financial security. We’ve seen that promise fulfilled in our own company, with H&R Block franchisees building thriving family businesses to pass on to the next generation.
Through our work in communities across the country, we’ve seen that the Latino community has unique needs and challenges when it comes to small business ownership and management. As such, H&R Block is committed to providing comprehensive support to the Latino small business ecosystem, which we achieve through various initiatives.

In the spirit of making every block better, we hire local talent, and provide training and opportunities for advancement, so our team reflects the communities we serve.

Initiatives like our partnership with The Home Depot help those in the skilled trades – a significant part of our economy with specific tax needs – navigate the complexities of running a business, by arming them with tools for taxes and bookkeeping. The H&R Block experts behind these tools understand the tax code provisions relevant to the skilled trades, with the goal of helping business owners keep more of their hard-earned money and building a solid foundation for long-term success.

Women who start businesses face unique challenges. H&R Block’s State of Women’s Small Business Report helps us understand the resources, guidance and tools women entrepreneurs of all backgrounds need.

According to the research, 80% of female respondents say they lack start-up capital and 76% say they need steady and reliable income. The need for a solid business plan was flagged by 56% of those surveyed, and 50% said they simply needed help getting started.

H&R Block established the Fund Her Future program to help meet these needs. Now in its second year, the 2025 program will recognize six women-owned small businesses with high growth and community impact potential. One small business owner will receive a grant of $50,000, with up to five additional recipients receiving $10,000 grants. In 2024, Ashley Ugarte with Hijita Chocolate in Austin, TX was one of the grant recipients and received a year of access to Block Advisors small business services.

By providing important resources, like tax preparation and small business services, H&R Block is committed to empowering Latino families to achieve their goals for financial stability and small business success.
