Latinos are an essential part of the story of America. Today, nearly one in five people in the United States is Latino and our communities contribute more than four trillion dollars to the national economy. We are entrepreneurs, public servants, educators, community leaders, and advocates.

Our impact is felt in every sector and every city, shaping the culture, the economy, and the future of this country. Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to honor these contributions, but it is also a reminder that the work of building the next generation of leaders must continue. We need leaders who are prepared, confident, and committed to serving their communities and the nation.

For nearly five decades, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) has been driven by a simple but powerful idea: developing the next generation of Latino leaders. What began in 1978 as the vision of a few Members of Congress has grown into a national force for opportunity, mentorship, and leadership development. From the start, CHCI has believed that when emerging leaders are given access, training, support, and encouragement, they not only succeed personally but also help shape a stronger future for their communities and the nation. The importance of this work cannot be overstated. The challenges facing our country, whether economic, environmental, or civic, demand leaders who reflect the lived experiences of all communities.

This is why CHCI’s programs exist: to create the space, guidance, and experiences that strengthen emerging and established Latino leaders so they can rise to meet these challenges. Programs like the Congressional Internship Program, Public Policy and Postgraduate Fellowship Programs, Latino Hill Staff Academy, and NextGen Latino Leadership Program help participants refine knowledge, expand networks, and build skills needed to make a meaningful impact in every sector of society.

During their time in one of our programs, participants walk the halls of Capitol Hill, engage with policymakers, and learn how institutions work. Some stay on the Hill, growing through congressional offices to roles such as Legislative Directors and Chiefs of Staff. Others go on to graduate school, start businesses, lead nonprofits, practice law, or run for office. Each path reflects the same principle: with the right support and opportunities, Latino leaders are prepared to step into roles where they can make a meaningful difference.

The impact of CHCI’s work extends far beyond individual success. Every leader who gains knowledge, confidence, and experience strengthens the communities they serve and contributes to the nation’s future. Our 5,200 alumni throughout the country are evidence that this investment works. They show that developing leaders is not just about opening doors. It is about building a stronger and prosperous America. Alumni are actively shaping the sectors they enter. From government to business, law to education, and nonprofits to advocacy, CHCI alumni demonstrate that when leaders are prepared and empowered, the results ripple outward, creating opportunities and inspiring the next generation.

CHCI’s mission is particularly vital at this moment in our history. Latinos have always been part of the story that built this nation, yet too often our communities have been underrepresented where decisions are made. By providing emerging leaders with the tools, guidance, and networks they need, CHCI ensures that the perspectives and talents of our communities are part of shaping the future. Investing in leadership development is an investment in America itself. It ensures that when challenges arise, there are leaders equipped to respond with vision, knowledge, and a commitment to service.

The accomplishments of CHCI alumni remind us that leadership is cultivated over time and with support. Each alumnus contributes not only to their immediate community but also to the fabric of the nation, reinforcing that Latinos have always played a vital role in shaping America. Hispanic Heritage Month is a moment to reflect on this legacy and to celebrate the contributions of Latinos to the country, while also recognizing that the work of developing the next generation of leaders is ongoing.

We invite you to be part of this mission. You can support CHCI directly, encourage emerging leaders to participate in our programs, or offer guidance and mentorship to those stepping into leadership roles. Every action strengthens the network of leaders who will shape our communities, our institutions, and our nation. Together, we can build a future where emerging Latino leaders are better prepared to make decisions that advance opportunity, strengthen communities, and contribute to the common good. An investment in leadership development is not just an investment in individuals; it is an investment in the future of America.
